More about our campaign:

Theater can be spectacular, dramatic and entertaining. It can also be engaging, intelligent and imaginative. In both senses, theater plays a huge role, teaching children lessons they would not learn about in an ordinary class.

This summer we asked our talented cast and production team “Why Does Children’s Theater Matter?” Now we ask you and your families to share your experiences in which theater made an impact on you and your perception of the world.

More About Our Campaign

Theater can be spectacular, dramatic and entertaining. It can also be engaging, intelligent and imaginative. In both senses, theater plays a huge role, teaching children lessons they would not learn about in an ordinary class. The artists who create the work play an integral part in the child’s theatrical experience as well.

As one NYC Grandmother said, “The interactions between the cast and audience at the conclusion [of Ballerina Swan] were terrific. My granddaughters were thrilled!

Book Recommendation: The Day the Crayons Quit

The Day the Crayons Quit

Reading with kids is not only fun, it’s important! In fact, according to a study by the National Commission on Reading, “the single most significant factor influencing a child’s early education success is being read to at home prior to beginning school.” Have you read The Day the Crayons Quit yet? It’s a bright, fun and imaginative story about a young boy who opens his box of crayons only to discover they went on strike!

Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun.

What can Duncan possibly do to appease all of the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best?

Kids will be imagining their own humorous conversations with crayons and coloring a blue streak after sharing laughs with Drew Daywalt and New York Times bestseller Oliver Jeffers.

We highly recommend checking out this book. After you read it, download the #NYCCTReads Activity Sheet and talk about the book together! Is there a better way to spend a Sunday?

We certainly don’t think so!

We read a lot of children’s books as we look for source material for our original, entertaining and enriching theater productions and are excited to share some recommendations with you. Of course, we want to hear from you as well, tell us your favorite children’s book in the comments or on Facebook & Twitter using #NYCCTReads and we will feature it in an upcoming post!

Happy Reading!
