Mommy Poppins on Please Bring Balloons: “Full of Magic and Imagination”

Thank you to Mommy Poppins for coming to see Please Bring Balloons and for their awesome review!

The audience is invited to dance, shake maracas, fly, and create their own balloons during the show. We even had a snowball fight at one point. It’s completely interactive, making it a great option for first-time and very young theatergoers.

There were lots of giggles and smiles throughout, and even with just two actors and a small setting, the show builds the kids’ anticipation about what will come next, keeping them guessing and engaged throughout. It’s a sweet, magical adventure filled with animals, balloons, music, and twinkling lights–and easily my 4-year-old’s favorite show in the last year.

“It helps kids see what is great about poetry!” – Says Me Says Mom

Thank you to Says Me Says Mom for coming to see Love That Dog and for their awesome review!

The great thing about the show is that it takes the children in the audience on the same journey as the boy in the book. It helps them to see what is great about poetry and inspires them to write poems of their own.

The star of this one man show, Derek Christopher Murphy does a really great job in the role. He is very good at capturing the innocence and joy of youth which helps the children in the audience relate to him better. His enthusiasm for the role is so infectious that even older children and adults can’t help enjoying themselves.

It is just an all around sweet and entertaining show for people of all ages.

— Jeryl Marcus, Says Me Says Mom on Love That Dog

Featuring the poetry of Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, and Walter Dean Myers, Love That Dog is a contemporary story about discovering the power of your own voice.  Based on the book by award-winning author Sharon Creech.

Love That Dog: “Entertaining and Poignant” – Mommy Poppins

Thank you to Mommy Poppins for coming to see Love That Dog and for their awesome review!

“The show stars the charismatic and talented Derek Christopher Murphy, who carries the show single-handedly. While he does talk to other characters offstage, including his teacher and an author, Murphy is front and center the entire time. Although Murphy is clearly a young man, he manages to convincingly portray a 10-year-old boy experiencing a range of emotions. He has also mastered the physical comedy that makes parts of the story lighthearted and relatable. Some of his exasperated expressions had my daughter howling with laughter”

“New York City Children’s Theater’s latest production for school-age kids, Love That Dog, is a one-actor play that manages to be both entertaining and poignant.”

“The most clever thing is the subtle way young viewers are introduced to poetry along with Jack. At first, he claims boys don’t write poetry, but as he—and the viewers—hear works by renowned poets, Jack slowly becomes captivated by the rhythms and the stories.”

— Fiona Taylor, Mommy Poppins on Love That Dog

Featuring the poetry of Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, and Walter Dean Myers, Love That Dog is a contemporary story about discovering the power of your own voice.  Based on the book by award-winning author Sharon Creech.

New York City Children’s Theater’s other winter production is aimed at school-age audiences, a stage adaptation of Sharon Creech’s book of the same name, which was inspired by the late Walter Dean Myers’ poem “Love That Boy.” Jack doesn’t like to write, and constantly resists his teacher’s urgings to try. But as she feeds him various prompts, he discovers he actually has a lot to say, especially about his beloved canine. It’s a celebration of unlocking the creativity we all have deep within.

“My Daughter was Riveted!”

A huge thank you to Mommy Poppins for their lovely review of Ballerina Swan and the Nutcracker!

Mommy Poppins Logo

As soon as the dancers took to the stage, my daughter was riveted.

A surprising twist midway through the show adds a level of drama that parents will appreciate, and yet another moment for a couple of age-old lessons, including not judging a book by its cover and remaining true to ourselves.

The show is also a great introduction to the Nutcracker story for little kids. You’ll see some of the most iconic parts of the holiday tale, including the epic battle between the Mouse King and the Nutcracker, the Christmas tree that grows taller and taller, and the classic Nutcracker scores

Nellie from Brooklyn Active Mama came to see Ballerina Swan and the Nutcracker last weekend and gave it a rave review, calling it “a good time for the whole family”! Thank you so much!! See what she had to say about Sophie’s newest adventure:

The story was so fun, so classic and so captivating.

The part that made Ballerina Swan and the Nutcracker awesome was that there was a lot of audience participation…The BEST part was towards the end when the entire cast came into the audience and grabbed the kids to dance with them.

I would highly recommend you catch Ballerina Swan & the Nutcracker this holiday season, it is a good time for the whole family!

Gotham Love Reviews Ballerina Swan and the Nutcracker

Gotham Love came to see Ballerina Swan and the Nutcracker this weekend and gave it an amazing review! See what she had to say about Sophie’s newest adventure:

The story was very sweet and tied in the holiday classic Nutcracker theme. I loved watching her little face as the classic music by Tchaikovsky brought everything to life.

I could see my daughter following along with the story and I can only imagine what she may have been thinking.

My daughter has never sat through an entire play before, so I was a little nervous. However, the performance was so exciting she loved every minute of the ballet dancers on stage.
