What happens during a Boogie Woogie Books class? 2018 Boogie Woogie Books instructor, Claire, tells us:
For the last few months I have been co-teaching NYCCT’s Boogie Woogie Books program with the incomparable, Garry Novikoff. Boogie Woogie Books is a weekly story time and music class for 0-5 that encourages literacy, social skills and creativity.
Every Saturday morning, I would wake up bright and early to make the journey to the Upper East Side with my blue and pink suitcase full of shakers and scarves. It would not take long after setting up until I was greeted with high fives and sweet smiles from so many little ones. I loved my Saturday mornings with Garry and the little ones because of all the different personalities we would see!
I miss those little ones now that I am no longer singing and dancing with them every Saturday, but I know they will all be great thinkers and creators one day.
From 6-month old’s being completed engaged in a story to a grooving 3-year-old with the best dance moves- they all had a different way of Boogieing with us. The wisdom and creativity from our group of little ones was inspiring every week.
Although each week came with different bits of excitement, one memory in particular stays dear to me. This moment came after a class where we read Bus Stop by Taro Gomi and Subway by Christopher Niemann- our theme was transportation. After class I saw one of the children that we just had in class at the same bus stop that I was at. She saw me and came right up and excitedly told me about how we were both taking the bus like in the book! This small moment meant so much to me because I knew then these children heard and engaged in the stories and songs. They were actually learning and developing in the class. I miss those little ones now that I am no longer singing and dancing with them every Saturday, but I know they will all be great thinkers and creators one day.
