Derek Christopher Murphy of Love That Dog

Tell us a little bit about where you’re from! I was born in Livingston, New Jersey and grew up in South Orange, New Jersey with my parents and my two younger siblings. I also went to boarding school and college in New Jersey, so I’m very much a “Jersey Boy” at heart.

My childhood pet was… My favorite, and only, childhood pet has got to be my dog, Prince. He’s a very tiny, very curly Bichon Frise and he barks every time the doorbell rings. I love him because he loves to sit on my lap whenever I’m watching TV or reading a book.

Three things most people would be surprised to learn about me are:
1. I played JV football in high school and was also state champion pole vaulter!
2. I didn’t learn to drive until I was 19.
3. I had a speech impediment when I was a kid and went to speech therapy for 5 + years.

Families should see Love That Dog because… it’s a really beautifully crafted story that focuses on a boy learning to to express himself and his emotions, which can be very hard for young boys to do! On top of that, its a fun and filled with really cool special effects and animations and really makes words come to life for kids and families. Plus, there’s a really adorable dog in it!

My favorite children’s book is… probably The Series Of Unfortunate Events series. I literally couldn’t put them down, I was so obsessed with them. I loved how the author, Lemony Snickett, told these thrilling, scary, and sometimes really sad stories about the Baudelaire siblings in an incredibly funny and witty way. Also, Count Olaf is one of the best villains of all time.

Derek is super excited to make his New York City Children’s Theater debut with Love That Dog! He was most recently seen as “Blue” in Atlantic Theater Company’s production of 1001 Nights written by EGOT winner Bobby Lopez.
