New York City Children’s Theater is excited to announce that our 6th Annual Middle School Playwriting Competition is still happening, with a few tweaks!

Although these are trying times, we hope to inspire creative engagement with drama, even while we cannot be present in the theater!

We hope that this challenge might serve as a unique creative writing assignment that spans the subjects of English and Drama for middle school students, and is the perfect project to work on from home!

2019-20 Middle School Playwright Competition

New York City Children’s Theater is seeking short plays from some of the most talented playwrights in New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut: Middle School Students!

Theme: Inspiration Strikes

This year, we’re asking students in grades 6-8 to write an original, entertaining, and enriching 10-minute play inspired by their favorite book, movie, song, etc. Plays may not be direct adaptations of the work, rather the students should use the source for inspiration, but write their own story. For an example, please email or

The acting was phenomenal, as were all the plays. Thank you for giving my daughter this opportunity!!! Thank you, again and again, for making this important opportunity available to young writers. She was so motivated after the rehearsal on the 12th that she sent me a completely new 15 page play on the 13th (apparently having spent all night up writing it!).

It was such a great experience and I felt lucky to help share the talents of the amazing playwrights!

It was SUCH a pleasure! I loved getting to work with the kids, and help bring those lovely scripts to life!

I had a ball watching all of the young Talent read the plays of the young people!

Thank you so much for the amazing experience she had. It was really incredible and she feels so inspired to write more plays! Please thank the actors and the director for all their great work!

Thank YOU so much! Working on these plays was a real treat for me. It was so great to be in a room full of strong young female voices! Afterwards, one family thanked me, so I know how much it meant to them. It’s very touching for me as an actor! NYCCT is such a special company, and I’m proud to have worked with you.
