Writer Submissions for New York City Children’s Theater

New York City Children’s Theater currently produces three to four shows a year in midtown Manhattan. Generally, productions are either targeted to audiences ages 3–7 or ages 8 to adult. We’re interested in a wide variety of performance genres, including plays, musicals, dance and puppetry.

Respecting young audiences and their experiences is extremely important to us, and we hold ourselves to the same artistic standards as any company producing for primarily adult audiences. We do not believe in talking down to young audiences or preaching to them, rather, we hope to incite curiosity and spark discussions among children, their parents and teachers.

What Excites Us About a Writer

We are excited by writers who are interested in contributing to big conversations about the world, who are interested in posing questions and giving an audience the means to continue tackling them after the show is over. Prior experience writing for young audiences is definitely not necessary, and the more a writer can free him/herself from stereotypes about children’s theater and young audiences, the better. We love to collaborate, and look for writers who value collaborating with our artistic staff.

We Only Produce New Work

It’s unlikely that we’ll move ahead on a project that we didn’t commission, and we won’t consider anything that’s already had a New York production. We only give out a small number of commissions a year, but the process starts by getting to know a writer’s work.

If you wish to be considered for a commission, please send a resume, writing sample (complete script, need not be for young audiences), music files if applicable, and any other supporting materials that might help us get a better sense of your work to ehalpern@nycchildrenstheater.org.

Please allow a minimum of two months for a reply. Unfortunately, we can only respond to one submission per writer/writing team at a time.
