We asked the cast of The Emperor’s New Clothes and More Magical Stories what advice they had for aspiring actors! See what they had to say:

Ayla

The best thing about acting is…how much imagination happens in the theater. We actors dress up, pretending to be different people, then pretend to be somewhere else while on stage, but the audience is also using their imagination to picture the world we’re creating. We’re all using our imaginations to pretend the same thing in our minds. It’s a wonderful feeling.

If I weren’t an actor, I would be…a psychiatrist. Because I’m still very interested in human minds, what makes them work, and why people think and act the way they do.

What advice would you give kids who want to be an actor too? You can do anything you put your mind to, and if you want to study humanity and fiction in all it’s beauty and faults, be an actor. You get to find the beauty in everything.

If I weren’t an actor, I would be…a zoologist or ecologist, or any profession working closely with animals in their natural habitat. I studied veterinary sciences in high school before becoming a performer. I still love animals and watch nature documentaries regularly.

What advice would you give kids who want to be an actor too? For any kids who want to be an actor, I would suggest practicing empathy. Understanding and sharing the feelings of others in real life helps when it’s time to pretend to be someone else and portray their feelings on stage. I would also practice telling stories with your friends. Telling any story with a clear beginning, middle, and ending sounds easy but still takes practice.

The best thing about acting is…when you get to make people laugh.

If I weren’t an actor, I would be…Well, I’m also a writer, so if I weren’t acting I’d probably write full-time. But if I couldn’t do either, I’d probably be a teacher, or work in politics (I am from Washington DC, after all).

What advice would you give kids who want to be an actor too? Get involved with lots of different theater groups, if you can! I’m also a big fan of trying your hand at writing too – if you can write for yourself, it’s a really valuable skill.

Nadav

The best thing about acting is…telling a story with my voice and body and face, not just with words.

If I weren’t an actor, I would be…an animator. I always loved animation. And I feel like the art of animation is like acting in a drawing. And I’ve always liked drawing

What advice would you give kids who want to be an actor too? Always look at people. Look at the funny little behaviors that are unique to every person. Notice them and imitate them. Make funny faces, and funny voices, and continue to enjoy being silly. Don’t stop being silly. Acting is a very silly thing to do, even if you’re playing a tragedy.and that’s the magic of it. So enjoy being silly.

The best thing about acting is…being able to share stories with others in a way that engages the imagination and allows you to see life from someone else’s perspective.  I love transporting an audience, sharing an experience with them that may be different from their own. Acting is also a lot like playing. It’s so much fun to create and play with other actors!

If I weren’t an actor, I would be…working with people somehow!  I LOVED studying psychology in school.  I likely would have gone into either psychological research or occupational therapy.

What advice would you give kids who want to be an actor too? There are so many ways to work as an actor or in the performing arts! Some people want to be in the movies, some people want to be on a Broadway stage. Some people realize they love directing, or writing scripts and plays. There are so many opportunities to tell stories, both as an actor and otherwise, and all of these jobs are very important!  Believe in yourself, ask questions, never stop exploring and being curious, and trust you will find your own personal success doing what you love.
