Ora Fruchter is a puppeteer, director, writer and educator. Her theatre company Doppelskope has performed original shows at Vital Theatre, Dixon Place, The Tank, The PIT, Puppet Showplace, and Muhlenberg College. This spring Doppelskope’s Gruff! will be presented at the Long Island Children’s Museum Theater. Tell us a little bit about where you’re from!I’m from Silver Spring, Maryland. My mom taught me to see characters everywhere (she used to make elaborate scenes out of cheese for snack). My dad taught me to make games out of language (he makes a lot of puns). They both love to build and nurture community and make music. I have three siblings and some of my favorite memories of are of going on family bike rides, having yard sales and going down our very long driveway on skateboards.
If I could jump into any book… it would be Phillip Pullman’s The Golden Compass because I want to know what animal my daemon would be.
My favorite children’s book is… Matilda because the main character is so strong and weird and funny and I love how she can have a really big heart and still be mischievous at the same time. It is the first chapter book that I loved so much that I had to re-read it.
Families should see The Little Red Fish…because when you experience the adventure of a book coming to life at the theatre it’s a little bit easier to recognize how vibrant the real world is.
