During a Literature at Play residency for students with special needs, students work with professional teaching artists as they explore a class-chosen book through multi-disciplinary activities, such as creative movement, theater, and songwriting activities.

  • Program Benefits

Through a large-scale assessment and evaluation project funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Literature at Play reported the following benefits for students with special needs:

    • Full classroom engagement and active participation in sensory-motor activities
    • Advanced recognition of non-verbal cues (body language, facial expression, gesture) and improved emotional literacy development
    • Improved social skills and communication between students
    • Developed pro-social behaviors and appropriate self-expression
    • Heightened sense of self-confidence
  • Curriculum Design

Our curriculum is designed to meet the sensory, social, and behavioral needs of each participating student. We work closely with the classroom teachers and Para-Educators in order to specifically devise a program model with differentiated lessons for each of our partnering schools.

  • Fees

Literature at Play residencies run five or more sessions, costing $100 per class, per session.

Include a New York City Children’s Theater touring production as part of your residency to extend and deepen the learning experience!
