A Note from Hit The Lights! Theater Co.
From the beginning of our process with the new York City Children’s Theater, we were intrigued by Taste the Clouds.  What struck us about the book initially were its beautiful pictures – painterly images, pleasantly surreal. They do the bulk of the story telling, and allow your eye to roam about the page, taking in the expression of the girl (often ecstatic) and the dog’s (often comedic). The pictures are complimented by the minimal dialogue, asking questions as much to the reader as to the characters about what they’re willing to believe the girl can do. These qualities of story driven images, minimal dialogue, and audience experience aligned strongly with the kind of theater that we like to see and the kind of theater we like to make.  We set to work to translate the wonders of the book to the stage, relying on previously developed methods of storytelling, and allowing ourselves to be guided towards new and unfamiliar modes of storytelling.  Inspired by the story, we discovered exciting new storytelling modes and theatrics that were previously inconceivable.
We are curious people, and driven towards wonder, as the book suggests it’s audience to do, and we hope that our show drives your children and yourselves towards that same wonder-filled place.  We hope your children walk out of our show feeling braver, with permission to question what is possible, and we hope you walk out of our show forgetting the limits that have been imposed on you around what you can and cannot believe. We also hope, of course, that  you and your family exit our show smiling, lighter, and feeling entertained.  Thank you for going on this journey with us.
